Mountain Biking
Mountain
biking in Costa Rica. The mountainous terrain, and miles of highways
and dirt trails make Costa Rica ideal for mountain biking. Trails
which traverse along pristine beaches, around volcanoes and lakes,
through lush rainforest, and over high mountain tops will challenge
even the most proficient rider.
Several National
Parks, such as Santa Rosa, Rincon de la Vieja, and Tapanti, offer
terrific biking trails for the well conditioned. Also, of particular
interest is the area surrounding Arenal Volcano. A well maintained
dirt trail, which encompasses the entire lake, offers spectacular
scenery of the volcano and the neighboring countryside. This dirt
road, passable by four wheel drive vehicle only, winds through
steep rolling hills lined with farms and small communities. The
entire excursion, depending on your physical condition and skill
level, can be accomplished within one day. However, don't plan
much for the following day. Caution!!! During the rainy season,
several of the large rivers which cross this road swell to levels
impeding or even denying your passage. We recommend that you consult
with a local authority or someone knowledgeable in the area.
While the
majority of heavily traveled highways in Costa Rica are paved,
we do not recommend that you ride roadside. The narrow roads,
heavy traffic and general disrespect for bikers is evident and
should be valued. Whether riding solo, or among an organized group,
your most memorable experiences will be those while riding in
the breathtaking countryside . Regardless of your final destination,
however, we suggest that you prepare properly, as Costa Rica's
tropical sun, elevation and mountainous landscape will require
your best effort, and then some.

tropical getaway at your pace
