Juan Castro Blanco National Park
Size: 14.258 hectares.
Location: Northwestern end of Costa Rica's Central Valley.
Trails: Limited.
This National Park is located at the northwestern end of the Central Valley, a part of the Central Volcanic Range Conservation Area together with other nearby protected areas.
4000 m.m. Rainfall per year and an irregular topography is spectacular in the area Juan Castro Blanco National Park to protect a strip of primary and secondary forests, 700-2267 m above sea level. Three life zones contain a rich flora, premontane rain forest, wet forest and lower montane rain forest.
This national park has 44 species of amphibians, 15% of the national total of reptiles, 107 bird species and 30 mammal species, 64 of these as threatened or endangered in Costa Rica.
Some of the most common animals are the grass and harlequin frogs, Quetzal, bat falcons, basiliks, coyotes, cuckoos and tapirs.
Some archaeological finds in the area revealed that the region was a crossroads of cultures from the north and the south continent.
