Poas National Park
Size: 5,599 hectares.

Poas is a strato volcano, which rises 2708 meters above sea level. It is one of the most spectacular volcanoes in Costa Rica, with a breathtaking landscape. It has also produced excellent soils for harvest and has enormous potential for the production of energy from hydrological and geothermal resources.
Besides the main crater, Botos Lake and the cone of Frantzius, there are at least half a dozen piroclastic cones around savannah woodland of Redonda and Bajos del Tigre. These cones are made of small lava flows, ash, lapilli and fusiform bombs.
In the park, there are four main habitats in areas with little or no vegetation, covering an area of arrayan, a stunted forest, and a cloud forest. Examples of the flora include small cypress trees, tucuico, small cedar and small cypres. The dwarf forest is predominant in this area.
Some mammals live in the park. These include marmots (marsupials), shrews that are among the smallest mammals in the world, bats and more than 79 species of birds such as sooty robins, black guan, Quetzal and the emerald toucan.
Poas park is situated in the northeastern city of Alajuela, located near the San Jose, in the Central valley.
